Rule the city or the roads

Choose to rule the city or patrol the roads and gain bonus points with the new king and robber tiles. Only a king can rule a large city. Grow your city and claim the king tile for bonus points. Explore the roads instead and claim the bonus points for the longest road with the robber tile. The city belongs to the king, but the roads are the robber’s domain.

Patrol the city

Two large city tiles let you start the game with the eponymous city itself. The mysterious count oversees the city of Carcassonne, patrolling the main areas of the city: the castle, the market, the blacksmith and the cathedral. Free trapped followers or block other followers with the count’s movement around the city.

New tiles give new chances

12 new land tiles expand the world of Carcassonne even further. Placing the new bazaar tile allows you to host an auction, giving you the chance to spend your earned points to buy advantageous tiles. The player willing to bid the highest will get first choice of tiles to then place and score.

Small cities will score you a few points, but the new castle tile can transform the city and give you a chance to score even more points. As the area around the castle develops, the next feature to be finished and score will give you points as well because of the castle tile. Will you build the castle and take the gamble to score more?

Get around blocked paths

Dead ends aren’t a problem anymore! Travel the long road, crossing bridges into new lands. With 12 wooden bridge tokens, players can easily continue a blocked road with a bridge piece. Follow the new connected roadway to score.

Grow your flock, gain the high ground with hills, and cultivate a profitable vineyard in the ninth expansion for Carcassonne.

Build hills and cultivate vineyards

Get a better view with the hills and gain the advantage from the high ground. Hill tiles are elevated with another tile facedown beneath them. When scoring, the meeple on the hill will break a tie and claim the points. Add thriving vineyards to grow wine around a monastery and increase its value. Watch out for sabotage from your opponents! Only a completed monastery can claim the bonus points from the vineyards.

Increase your flock

The shepherd carefully watches over his flock as they wander through the fields. Over time the flock can grow but be careful; if you wait too long to return your flock to the stable, wolves may attack. After placing a tile with a field, you may place a shepherd and immediately draw a token from the cloth bag. Drawing a sheep token will increase your flock. However, if you draw a wolf token the flock will scatter.

The tent has been pitched outside of town and the performers are ready to thrill the crowd with their death-defying stunts. A new world of excitement awaits in Under the Big Top, the tenth expansion for award-winning tile-laying game Carcassonne. Capturing the thrill of the circus, this expansion incorporates twenty new Land tiles and two new follower types into the Carcassonne library. Players can use them to attract people from all over the countryside to view their menagerie of animals or witness their feats of death-defying skill. Just like the daring risks that circus performers take, Under the Big Top gives players plenty of opportunities to score big points—if they can draw in the crowds! 

Enter the big top

At the circus, the big top is the main attraction. That’s no exception in Under the Big Top. Much of the expansion focuses on clustering groups of followers around the new tiles with the hope of getting big points when their features are scored. Gather meeples on the Circus tile and its accompanying big top figure or the eight tiles surrounding it and you’ll be rewarded the next time a Circus tile is drawn. Additionally, the circus is so exciting that normal followers are inspired to leave their lives behind and join the show. Stack your meeples into a meeple-pyramid on the Acrobat tiles, impress your friends, and score points once the show is over. Finally, ringmasters behave like normal followers until the circus shows up. When that happens, they score bonus points for being adjacent to Circus and Acrobat tiles when the features they’re on are scored. Under the Big Top brings a whole new layer of excitement to Carcassonne. Who will put on the best show and draw the biggest crowd?
